State Minority Policies Dataset (1974 - 2024)

The State Minority Policies Dataset (1974 - 2024) offers an extensive review of minority recognition and integration policies over fifty years, focusing on how different states address minority groups through formal and informal measures. This dataset is collected for my dissertation project. The current version of the dataset includes new European democracies and their policies regarding ethnic minority groups. I plan to expand the dataset to include Middle Eastern countries.

This dataset captures a wide range of information, from constitutional recognition and legal status to educational provisions and media representation in minority cultures and languages. It also includes data on territorial autonomy, participation in parliamentary processes through ethnic parties or reserved seats, and the presence of ethnic armed groups.

Additional dimensions covered include the impact of a country's EU membership status or application process on its minority policies, adherence to international conventions like the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, and the inclusion of ethnic questions in national censuses.

This dataset is crucial for scholars and policymakers interested in the dynamics of state-minority interactions. It is a vital resource for comparative analyses and understanding the factors that influence the recognition and integration of minority groups in various political and cultural contexts. The dataset shows that state minority policies vary significantly across different groups and periods, highlighting the dynamic nature of these policies in response to various factors.
